This week’s Midweek Moments are all about homecomings: we’ve both chosen moody river shots of our cities of origin.

At the weekend, my husband and I took a quick trip back to Launceston, Tasmania, for a family wedding. On Sunday morning, we walked around the city in which we’d both grown up. The day was cold, wet, and windy, and there was even a bit of thunder. Mid-walk, we were caught in a downpour and sought shelter in a coffee shop by the river. (Stillwater at Richie’s Mill—great coffee!)

Tasmanian weather is notorious for its four seasons in a day and, true to form, by the time our coffee came, the rain had cleared and the sun was out. I slipped outside and took this photo of a fishing boat on the Tamar River. The sunlight was dazzling on the water, and I had to overexpose the background in order to see the boat. It wasn’t until I uploaded the pics that I saw its name: Launceston. How appropriate!

As Monique’s been entertaining her Sydney-based Mum this week, her camera’s stayed packed away. She was pondering which archival photo to choose for our Midweek Moment, and ended up choosing one which complemented mine.

It was taken on a ferry to Manly, and shows two ferries going in opposite directions, against the backdrop of a moody sky and the Sydney skyline. Although the sky was cloudy and eventually bestowed rain on Monique’s family reunion, the air was warm and humid—the kind of day that covers your skin with a constant sheen of perspiration.

Although Monique now calls Perth her home, she says she’s a Sydney girl and days like the one in this picture bring that two-home feeling to the forefront.

I couldn’t help but notice the differences between the two photos—the busyness and modernity of the harbour and the skyline of Sydney, compared to tranquility and old-worldly feel of Launceston’s. Each is lovely in its own way.
